Another genre that you may know is the fantasy genre, which includes things such as a talking pig and a spelling spider! The fantasy genre includes books in which characters do things that would not be possible in real life.
For example, talking animals are often included in fantasy stories. Make-believe worlds might also be included. The characters in a fantasy story might seem very real, but they might also do things that could not happen in real life.
The word 'fantastic' comes from the word 'fantasy'. Something that is 'fantastic' is imaginary and fanciful. The book, Charlotte's Web belongs in the fantasy genre because of its many fantastic characteristics. For example, many fantasy books are set in a realistic place.
The events in Charlotte's Web occur at the Arables' home, on the Zuckermans' farm and in their barn, and at the county fair, which are all realistic places where a true story could occur. Authors of fantasy stories often use realistic settings to make it seem as if their stories might actually be true.
The chapters of Charlotte's Web go back and forth between realistic settings and characters and imaginary happenings. The characters in Charlotte's Web are all 'real'—they are not imaginary. For example, Fern is a little girl, Avery is a little boy, and Lurvy and Mr. Zuckerman are men. Even the animals are real—geese, rats, spiders, pigs, cows, sheep, and horses all exist in real life.
What makes these animals fantastic is that they can talk to and understand each other. They do not talk to the people in the story, although Fern says she can hear them. Charlotte is probably the most fantastic character of all. Not only can Charlotte talk, she can read and spell! Charlotte can also weave words into her web for the humans to read. This is the most imaginary part of the story; however, because the setting is real and the characters are very realistic, when you are reading Charlotte's Web , you can almost believe that Charlotte can do these things!
That is what makes a good fantasy story—the reader can almost believe that it could really happen. Books are organized into groups called genre and Charlotte's Web is considered a fantasy book.
